A hamburger may have saved my life. Many of you may remember the cartoon 'Popeye'. One of the standing characters in the cartoon was named Wimpie. Wimpie's running line was, "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today". I thought that was funny until I had to actually use that line for myself.
A friend asked me to lunch at McDonald's. Like Wimpie, I did not have enough money for even the value menu. Unlike Wimpie, this was not a cartoon. It was my life. That is when I had what I call a '12155 Encounter'.
A '12155 Encounter' is the point in life when someone makes the choice to stand up for change. For Black people in America, major change began when one lady chose to stand up for change by actually sitting down. It was December 1, 1955 (12155) when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus. At McDonald's, I chose to refuse to live the same way I had been living, a '12155 Encounter'.
Here's the question, "What are you sick and tired of being sick and tired of?" Write that down and carry it with you. Do not bemoan your troubles...embrace them. Where there is no problem, there can be no solution...no test, no testimony. Any and all great people FIRST CHOSE TO BE GREAT. Don't be like Wimpie. Make a choice to be GREAT.
